Rice Grower of the Year Tour - 18 March, 2005

On 18 March, 2005 a small group of YIN members visited the winners of the 2004 IREC Irrigated Farm Competition - Graham & Jean Menzies and Glen & Julie Andreazza of Wilbriggie.

Graham & Jean Menzies

  • Farming 360 Ha property at Willbriggie for 40 years
  • Laser levelled whole property in the early 80’s (first farm in the MIA to laser whole farm
  • Recycle water back on to 100% of property
  • Very efficient pump ($1-2 /Ml)
  • Rice/wheat rotation
  • Dry sows rice, with high seeding rates (180kg /Ha)
  • Consistently achieves above average yields
  • 2004 Reiziq 12.6,
  • 2003 Paragon 13.5,
  • Average water use 12.06 (1999-2003). Aims for 1t/Ml or better
  • 2 way split fertiliser regime (3/4 up front at sowing and ¼ at PI)
  • Uses variable rate technology for fertiliser
  • Deep water (25cm on high side)
  • Ability to drain each bay direct into recycle channel
  • Sod sows wheat into rice stubble to make best use of water remaining in soil profile

Glen & Julie Andreazza

  • Farming for 23 years
  • 190 Ha cropping property at Willbriggie
  • RGA Mirrool branch secretary
  • Whole property is laser levelled (trialling roof topping)
  • Recycle water back on to 90% of property
  • Rice/wheat rotation with alternative break crops such as canola
  • Aerial sows rice, seeding rate 160kg/Ha
  • Consistently achieves above average yields- t/Ha
  • 2004 Doongara 11.3, Quest 11.6, Amaroo 12.3
  • 2003 Paragon 13.5
  • 2002 Doongara 11.6
  • 2001 Doongara 11.6, Amaroo 13.1
  • 2000 Doongara 9.3, Jarrah 8.9, Langi 10.3 (cold year)
  • 1999 Doongara 12.3, Amaroo 13.1, Namagi 12.1
  • Average water use 11.6 Ml/Ha (1999-2004)
  • 2 way split fertiliser regime (3/4 pre-sow and ¼ PI)
  • Uses multi-spacial aerial imaging for variable rate fertiliser application
  • Deep water (25 cm on high side)
  • Sod sows wheat into rice stubble to make best use of water remaining in soil profile
